Norton Wildlife Watch is a junior group (aged 6-15+) of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT) ACTION for birds* January 24th/25th: Big Garden Birdwatch* http://www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch/ ACTION for wetlands^ Feb 2nd: World Wetlands Day^ www.ramsar.org ACTION for birdboxes Feb 14th– 21st: National Nestbox Week www.bto.org/nnbw/index.htm January 12th New Year – we’re planning for 2009 action after our busy 20th birthday year in 2008! How did you get on with your 2008 resolutions?? Still trying to fit in the Dragonflies! January 26th Winter Birds – time to make bird cake to follow up the Big Garden Birdwatch*. Which birds did you see in your garden? Download a spotter’s sheet from the website*. February 8th (Sun) Potteric Carr 10.30 – 3.00 A chance to explore the YWT flagship reserve at Doncaster (SE 599003) & especially to look out for migrating birds. Bring your binoculars! Join other Watch groups from all over Yorkshire. A buffet lunch provided at a small cost. February 9th Web Workshop – Nobby will join us to update our website. But don’t forget World Wetlands Day^ - on the theme Upstream, Downstream: Wetlands connect us all March 2nd Pond-dipping - Peter Anderson helps us to discover what’s living in the pond water from the garden. Have we seen any ‘first signs’ of Spring? March 16th Lakeside Clean–up – the Midget Gems will lead our local community outreach. March 30th Chafer Wood – by popular request, a return to Ebberston (SE 899832) to do some tree planting. Everyone is invited to plant their own tree … time to off-set some carbon? April 27th Riverbank Spring Clean - annual Derwent tidy-up. Meet at Netto car park. May 11th Pickering Low Carr Farm – as part of our planned programme of Watch help on this YWT reserve (driveway SE803797). Come prepared to take some action!! June 1st Arboretum Woodland Walk – at Castle Howard, an evening to enjoy trees. World Environment Day http://www.unep.org/wed - Be in tune with wildlife on June 5th June 14th (Sun) Dragonflies on Norton Ings??? – 14.00-16.00 Pond-dipping and a search for the 18 different types of dragonflies that have been seen there. A fine day please! June 15th Green Issues – at Ryedale House, a chance to meet Shan, our prospective MEP (Member of European Parliament) representing the Green Party. 2009 Tunza priorities? June 29th Fossiling on the Heritage Coast – join the NE Yorks Geology Trust at Robin Hoods Bay for a fossil hunt! Take the bat detectors and see if we can ‘hear’ any bats too? July 13th Cranedale Centre - we are again sharing a meeting with Driffield Wildlife Watch, this time to explore the Wolds – snails or something else perhaps? August 17th-21st Tunza International Children’s Conference, Korea - let’s hope there will again be Norton Watch representation…! The theme is Climate Change: Our challenge September 14th Tunza Report - what are the commitments for 2009? What can we all learn? _ Meet at Norton College, Mon. 18.30 -19.30, unless otherwise indicated _ Open to everyone including adults - all are very welcome to join in _ Come prepared! - suitable clothing/footwear; bring 'tools' for the job _ Identification books always useful
